5 Questions with Gillord Pisas

Gillord Pisas is an entrepreneur from the island of Curaçao who is is all about positive energy and inspiring people to do the things that inspire them. He’s currently part of the betahaus community as a Location Manager. betahaus is a community-driven organization that creates collaborative spaces for people to work together in Berlin, Hamburg, Sofia and Barcelona.

Hi Gillord, thanks for taking the time to talk with us. Can you tell us a bit about what your role at betahaus involves? And what does it take to excel in the role?

Currently, I am the Location Manager for one of the spaces in Berlin, betahaus Neukölln to be exact, in which my role includes overseeing the daily operations, leading the Front Desk team and the development of operational procedures. I also assist the HR department with recruiting, training, and developing our new colleagues.

In my opinion, one of the most important aspects to excel in this role, is by always being optimistic and positive towards any challenges that might come your way. That plus good communication are my top two necessary skills to excel in this role. Being honest and sincere with your team and others goes a very long way.

What sets betahaus apart from other coworking spaces in Berlin?

If I could be honest, I would say a lot of our members actually become friends with each other. And that is pretty cool if you ask me. The reason I think that is so cool is, in the process of us providing the space to like-minded individuals to collaborate and work together, I wouldn’t necessarily think these people would have dinners and go to parties together outside of their working routines. But it happens, and what’s especially cool is that we are sometimes the ones introducing them to one another.

How do you want people to feel when they enter your space, and how do you make that happen?

The most important thing for us is that we want everybody to feel welcome and comfortable when entering our spaces. We want positive and inspiring energy to be contagious, which would then enable people to do the things they have to do in an effective and enjoyable way.

This is possible by always introducing people from our community to new members. We organize several community events for people to interact and most importantly, we treat everybody with respect, because people don’t remember what you do, but they remember how you made them feel.

What’s one thing that any space can do to make its members happier?

I believe by interacting with them on a daily basis or as much as possible, whether it’s a simple good morning or a quick chat, everybody is going through something you can’t see, and by talking to them, you get to know these things, in which, you can try to support them in any way you can.

If you had to give one piece of advice to a manager struggling to connect with their community, what would you tell them?

Get to know who these people are, get to know their stories, what brought them to your city, their kids birthdays.

One of your responsibilities is to provide for these people, but not just A4 papers and coffee, but also, be an ear to hear how they feel and what inspires them. And always, always introduce them to new people, that introduction goes a long way.
