Happy Coworking Day!

This Sunday, August 9th, 2020, is the 15th annual Coworking Day

Why August 9th? It’s the date when a coworking space, in the sense we use it today, was first announced by Brad Neuberg. This was likely not the first space that could qualify as a coworking space — and the concept is arguably much older — but August 9th has come to symbolize the start of the modern coworking era.

What we only could have imagined then was the mainstream acceptance of coworking and the continuing spirit of creativity and community. Back in 2012 we mused on why it’s worth celebrating coworking and came to this conclusion:

Coworking is not only a way of escaping lonely working at home or a restrictive office, but has made this casual workspace sharing much more than that. It removed walls and barriers, and focused on the community.

That is more true today than ever!

This year we can’t celebrate the ways we normally do. But Coworking Day isn’t about a specific celebration, but rather acknowledging the ways in which coworking has improved our lives and our communities — then reflecting on the ways that we can improve over the next 15 years.

How do you plan to celebrate? Tag us on social media if you find a clever way to incorporate social distancing, virtual communities, or some other pandemic-ready get-together for your event. Or share what else you’re doing to mark the occasion.

Wishing you all a very happy coworking day!
